The article examines the issue of two of the so-called „folk names of our old coins“ – „bodka“ and „babka.“ It has been proven that these names are not medieval in origin and that coins called „bodki“ or „babki“ never circulated in the medieval Bulgarian state. It has been established that both names are relatively late derivations in the Bulgarian language (after the end of the 16th century), and the routes by which they were borrowed into it were from the western parts of the Balkan Peninsula (for „babka“) and from Transylvania (for „botka/bodka“).
