Tsar John (Ivan) Sratsimir, copper coins, type VII, undescribed monogram – “pious”Abstract
The coinage of Tsar John (Ivan) Sratsimir (1352/55 – 1396), similar to that of Tsar John (Ivan) Alexander (1331 – 1371), is characterized by great typological diversity. So far, one type of silver and twelve types of copper coins are known (Dochev 2009, 223). In recent years, the number of publications describing unknown coin types of the ruler or specifying details of the images on his copper coins has increased.
This communication presents coins of Tsar John (Ivan) Sratsimir of a variant of type VII (Dochev 2009, 244; Ovcharov 2015, 137), engraved on the reverse with an undescribed monogram of the epithet „БЛАГОВЪРЕN“ (“pious”), which is included in the cross.
The newly described monogram can be included in the material evidence of the numismatics of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, representing an act of the ruler’s office and administration and reflecting the praise of the ruler.
